Roseville, MN

A nonstop stream of cars and delivery trucks lined up outside the Army’s headquarters in Roseville, MN to donate nonperishable foods at a special weigh-in event on the last day of the Twin Cities Salvation Army’s “2 Million Pounds” food drive. Earlier this year, the 2-million-pound goal was reached. Some called the goal impossible. The Twin Cities community proved otherwise, donating enough cash and nonperishable foods to accomplish the largest food drive in local history. The food will be used to replenish The Salvation Army’s nine Twin Cities food shelves, which have been strained by record demand. 

Rancho Palos Verdes, California

The Commons is a new podcast from The Salvation Army’s Caring Magazine for women who want to talk about relevant and relatable topics—from mental health to marriage, and even what the Bible says about equity. The show is co-hosted by Cassandra Amezquita and Meagan Ruff, two officers in the Army, moms and Jesus followers with full hands and full hearts. 

Guam

The groundbreaking ceremony for The Salvation Army’s Lighthouse Recovery Center for Women took place earlier this year at the Guam Corps’ Tiyan Headquarters. The center will be called Guam Famalao’an, Chamoru for Women’s House. The women’s treatment center is funded through a grant from the Guam Housing and Urban Renewal Authority and will expand the Lighthouse Recovery Center’s services to include a facility for inpatient treatment. 

Sharon, MA

This summer, The Salvation Army’s Camp Wonderland in Sharon, MA will have some help from Boston Red Sox legend David Ortiz and ThinkLite, a local leader in lighting technology. The David Ortiz Children’s Fund and ThinkLite donated 300,000 masks to Camp Wonderland as it prepared to welcome children back after being closed in 2020 due to COVID–19. Kids from the New England area are eager to return to the outdoor summer fun that Camp Wonderland has provided since it opened its doors in 1924. 

Port Jervis, New York

The Army in Port Jervis teamed up with the Outdoor Club of Port Jervis to provide an adventure week for youth in the area. This partnership gave children in the community a free and safe way to experience hiking, unique activities, and learn outdoor skills. 

Rockland County, NY

One hundred computers once used by municipal workers in Rockland County, NY will soon get a second life in the hands of schoolchildren and seniors attending Salvation Army programs. Rockland County Executive Ed Day recently signed a resolution that authorized the donation of surplus computers to seven local organizations, including The Salvation Army.

New Orleans, Louisiana

Thanks to a partnership with Cox Communications, The Salvation Army of Greater New Orleans has opened a new Technology Center. Area Commanders Majors Chris & Lynda Thornhill want to serve children, educationally, in the midst of the pandemic and beyond. Thanks to a grant from Cox, new computers as well as furniture for the tech center was purchased. This summer, the Center will be used during the Command’s summer day camp program, a first for the command. 

US Southern Territory

The USA Southern Territory is now using mobile army support hubs (MASH) cart tricycles. Eight units have been released to the field with a multitude of uses, but with a simple instruction: “Use for whatever it takes to preach the gospel!” They are quickly being utilized for mobile evangelism, youth programs, outdoor Sunday school and VBS, and can be taken along bike trails, in parks, under bridges, and can also serve the homeless and lost.
